2 Chronicles 20:14 — Jahaziel: A Prophet Raised Up by God
When Judah faced a vast enemy army, God raised up an unknown Levite named Jahaziel to speak a word of victory. Five truths from his story: when God speaks, victory follows.
“Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.”
— 2 Chronicles 20:14 (NIV)
When God Speaks, Victory Follows.
Who Was Jahaziel?
- He was a Levite — Jahaziel belonged to the tribe of Levi. The Levites were set apart to serve in the Temple, teach God's law, lead worship, and assist the priests.
- A descendant of Asaph — He came from Asaph's family — David's chief worship leaders. Their legacy continued for generations in worship, music, and prophecy.
- A prophet empowered by the Holy Spirit — The Bible does not call him “the prophet Jahaziel.” The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, giving him a word for the nation at a critical moment.
- Not famous, but faithful — Jahaziel was not a king or military leader. He was among the worshippers — yet God chose him to speak and shift the course of a nation.
His Prophetic Message
- Do not fear. — God addressed their first enemy — fear.
- The battle is not yours, but God's. — One of the greatest declarations in Scripture.
- Tomorrow go out against them. — Faith did not mean staying home. They still had to obey.
- Stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD. — Victory belonged to God. Israel's role was faith-filled obedience.
What Happened Next?
King Jehoshaphat believed Jahaziel's word. Instead of sending soldiers first, he appointed singers to lead the army in praise.
As they praised God, He caused confusion among the enemy armies, and they turned on one another. Judah did not have to fight the battle!
Timeless Truths for Us
- God often speaks after His people pray.
- He can use an unknown servant.
- Worship prepares the atmosphere for revelation and victory.
- God's promises give us courage.
- Our part is faith-filled obedience; His part is the victory.
