Genesis 13:14 — Lift Up Your Eyes, See What God Will Give
Lot chose by what he could see; Abram chose by what God could show him. Two different views produced two very different futures — and your future depends on the direction of your vision.
“And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward…”
— Genesis 13:14
Two Men, Two Views
Abram and Lot had traveled together for years, but their flocks had grown too large for the land to hold them both, and their herdsmen had begun to quarrel. So Abram, the elder, the one to whom God had given the original promise, did something remarkable: he let Lot choose first. “Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me,” he said. It was a moment that revealed two very different hearts before either man had even looked at the land. Abram was willing to release his rights. Lot was ready to seize his opportunity. What happened next would shape both of their futures forever.
By Sight: The Land Lot Chose
Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the plain of Jordan, well-watered everywhere, like the garden of the Lord. He chose quickly, based purely on appearance — lush, green, fertile, easy. What Lot could not see, or perhaps did not want to see, was that this well-watered plain sat in the shadow of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities whose people were “wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.” Lot focused on what looked good right in front of him, chose fast, and unknowingly walked toward a place of coming destruction. His eyes told him everything he wanted to hear, and nothing he needed to know.
By Faith: The Promise Abram Received
Abram was left with the land no one else wanted — and it was there, in that moment of apparent loss, that God spoke. “Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” Abram lifted his eyes in obedience rather than ambition. He trusted a promise he could not yet see fulfilled, and in return, he received a promise far greater than anything Lot’s well-watered plain could ever offer. Lot chose by sight and gained a temporary view. Abram chose by faith and gained an eternal inheritance.
Your Future Depends on the Direction of Your Vision
Two men stood at the same crossroads, and their whole future was decided by where they chose to look. Lot looked at what was directly before him. Abram looked at what was beyond him — toward a horizon only God could show him. This is still true for every one of us. The direction of your vision determines the direction of your life. Look only at your present circumstances, and you will make decisions based on what is convenient today. Lift your eyes toward what God has promised, and you will make decisions that outlast your lifetime.
Christ Revealed
Jesus is the ultimate “lift up your eyes” moment of Scripture. When the world could see only a cross, a tomb, and an apparent defeat, God was already showing a resurrection, an ascension, and a Kingdom that would never end. Those who judged by sight saw only Calvary’s shame. Those who walked by faith received the promise of eternal life. Every believer stands, like Abram, at the edge of a promise not yet fully seen — called to lift their eyes past the visible cross to the invisible glory that follows it.
Look Up. Trust Him. Walk by Faith.
Let go of what you cannot control — the land, the outcome, the timeline. Trust the One who sees it all, even the parts of your future that are still hidden from you. Let God’s Word be your guide rather than your circumstances, your emotions, or what simply looks good in the moment. Faith today becomes fulfillment tomorrow. The eyes that lift toward heaven will always see farther than the eyes that settle for what is merely in front of them.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have chosen by sight instead of by faith, settling for what looked good instead of waiting for what You promised. Teach me to release what I cannot control and to trust You with the outcomes I cannot yet see. When my circumstances tempt me to look only at what is in front of me, remind me to lift up my eyes toward Your promises instead. Thank You that what You have prepared for me will always outlast anything this world can offer. Give me the faith of Abram, who trusted a horizon he could not yet touch. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Faith Declaration
I declare that my future depends on the direction of my vision, and I choose to lift my eyes toward God’s promises rather than settle for what merely looks good. I will not make decisions based on appearance alone; I will walk by faith and trust the One who sees the whole picture. What God has promised me will always outlast what I can currently see. I release what I cannot control into His hands, and I declare that He is faithful to bring me into more than I could have chosen for myself.
