Genesis 18:14 — Not Too Hard for God
Is anything too hard for the LORD? Sarah's impossible situation became the stage for God to prove that His Word outweighs every circumstance.
“Is any thing too hard for the LORD?”
— Genesis 18:14
Three visitors came to Abraham's tent under the oaks of Mamre, and among them was the LORD Himself. In the middle of an ordinary meal shared in the shade of the trees, God spoke a promise that seemed almost laughable: within a year, Sarah would have a son. Sarah, listening from the tent door, did what most of us would do—she laughed, not out of joy but out of disbelief. Her body told her one story; God's Word told another. And God's question to her cuts straight to the heart of every impossible situation we face: “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?”
Sarah's Reality
Sarah's circumstances were not exaggerated for effect—they were simply the facts. She was ninety years old. She had waited decades for the promise God first spoke to Abraham. By every measure of human possibility, there was no pathway left for her to become a mother. This is where so many of us live: staring at a body, a bank account, a relationship, or a dream that offers no visible way forward. Sarah's story does not pretend the impossibility away. It confronts it head-on, and then it confronts it with the character of God.
Your Circumstances vs. His Word
Picture a set of scales. On one side sits every reason your situation seems impossible—the delay, the diagnosis, the closed door, the empty calendar. On the other side sits a single item: God's Word. It looks small next to the weight of your circumstances, but it is not light at all. His Word is heavier than your limitation. His power outweighs your calculation. His timing is wiser than your plan. Sarah asked, “How could this happen?” God asked back, “Is anything too hard for Me?” That question was never meant to be answered with human logic—it was meant to be answered with faith.
When You Can't Understand the How, Remember the Who
So much of our anxiety comes from trying to work out the mechanics of God's promises before we have surrendered to the character of the One who gave them. We want to see the how before we will trust the Who. But faith does not require a blueprint—it requires a Person. When you cannot trace God's hand, you can still trust His heart. The moment we stop demanding an explanation and start remembering who God is, the impossible situation stays the same size, but our fear of it shrinks.
The Journey from Promise to Fulfillment
Genesis 18 traces a path every believer eventually walks: God speaks His promise, we wait while trusting Him, we face what looks humanly impossible, we arrive at God's appointed time, and finally the promise is fulfilled. None of these stages can be skipped, and none of them are wasted. The waiting is not God being slow—it is God preparing both the promise and the person who will carry it. Isaac was not born on Sarah's timetable; he was born on God's, and that made all the difference.
Christ Revealed
Centuries later, another impossible birth would echo this same question. When the angel Gabriel told Mary she would conceive by the Holy Spirit, he closed with words that could have come straight from Abraham's tent: “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37). Isaac's miraculous birth was a shadow of a far greater one—the coming of Christ, born of a virgin, raised from the dead, proof beyond all doubt that nothing is too hard for the LORD. Every impossibility God has ever conquered points forward to the empty tomb, where the ultimate impossibility—death itself—was overturned.
Prayer
Almighty God, forgive me for the times I have measured Your ability by what I can see. When my circumstances tell me something is impossible, remind me of who You are. Give me faith to trust Your Word even when I cannot understand Your method or Your timing. And while I wait for Your work in my own life, make me an intercessor who faithfully stands in the gap for others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Faith Declaration
I declare that nothing is too hard for my God. I will not give up on His promise over my life, and when I cannot understand the how, I will remember the Who. God's Word is greater than my circumstances, His power is greater than my limitations, and His appointed time is perfect. I will wait, I will trust, and I will intercede, believing that what God has promised, He will accomplish.
