Genesis 5 — Two Lamechs: Same Name, Different Heart, Different Legacy
Genesis names two men Lamech — one from Cain's line who boasts of violence and revenge, and one from Seth's line, the father of Noah, who hopes in God's promise of comfort. Same name, but very different hearts and legacies.
Genesis introduces two men named Lamech — from two different family lines. One descends from Cain (Genesis 4); the other descends from Seth, leading to Noah (Genesis 5).
Lamech — Genesis 4
- Who is he? — A descendant of Cain, 7th from Adam, part of the line that moved away from God.
- What is he known for? — Violence, revenge, and pride.

What he represents — A life without God. His confidence is in himself and his strength.
Lamech — Genesis 5
- Who is he? — A descendant of Seth, 9th from Adam, father of Noah, part of the godly line that still seeks God.
- What is he known for? — Hope, faith in God’s promise, and looking forward to comfort and rest.

What he represents — A heart that waits for God. His hope is in God’s promise of deliverance.
