Psalm 147:4-5 — He Counts the Stars, He Calls You Beautiful

The God who determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name also heals the broken and binds up their wounds. You are not just another star — you are His.

“He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.”
— Psalm 147:4-5 (NIV)

Somewhere between numbering every star in the sky and healing the brokenhearted, this psalm makes a claim so large it is easy to skim past: the same God who determines the number of the stars and calls each one by name is the God who heals the broken and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). Verses 3, 4, and 5 sit right next to each other on purpose. The God of galaxies is the God of your wounds. The God whose understanding has no limit has not lost track of your story in the vastness of everything else He is holding together.

Known By Name

Astronomers estimate there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on every beach on earth, and Scripture says God does not just know the total — He calls each one by name. If God assigns a name to a ball of burning gas trillions of miles away, He has certainly not lost yours. This is what the psalm means when it says His understanding has no limit: there is no ceiling on His capacity to know, to remember, and to care, no matter how many other things — or people — He is attending to at the same moment.

What This Means for You

You are seen. In a universe this big, it would be easy to feel invisible. But the God who counts stars sees you, specifically, right where you are. You are not lost in the crowd of everything He is watching over.

You are known in a way no one else can know you. He calls you by name, not by category. Not “a person,” not “one of many” — you, by the name that is yours alone.

Your hurts are not ignored. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He does not simply notice pain from a distance; He tends to it, the way a physician dresses a wound with care.

His wisdom has no limit. Whatever is confusing about your circumstances is not confusing to Him. You are in good hands, even when you cannot see the whole picture yourself.

His power is strong enough for your story. Great and mighty is our Lord — strong enough to hold galaxies together and, at the very same time, strong enough to hold together whatever is falling apart in your life right now.

He Doesn’t Just Fix You…

There is a striking image behind this psalm’s promise: a broken vessel, cracked and shattered, being restored not by hiding the cracks but by filling them with light until the whole piece glows through every fracture line. That is closer to how God restores a person than simple repair is. He does not merely patch you back together so the damage is invisible. He takes the very places you were broken and turns them into the places His light shows through the brightest. He turns your scars into strength rather than erasing the story they tell. You are not abandoned. You are not a mistake. You are cherished.

Remember This Today

He sees you even where no one else is looking — in the quiet moments, the private struggles, the things no one else noticed. He gives you a place among the stars, a dignity that has nothing to do with how the world ranks you. He turns your scars into strength, redeeming what once felt like only loss. Your name is precious to Him — He does not greet you as a stranger but as one dearly known, “Hello, beloved.” He has called you for a purpose, not left you to drift without direction. And He is able, even now, to turn your pain into a purpose that shines, the way starlight travels through darkness for years before it ever reaches an eye that needed to see it.

Christ Revealed

The God who counts the stars is the same God who, in Christ, numbered Himself among us, taking on a body that could be broken so that ours could be healed. Jesus is described as the One through whom “all things were made” (John 1:3) — the very stars this psalm describes are His handiwork — and yet He is also the One who stooped low enough to bind up the brokenhearted in person, healing the sick, touching the outcast, and calling ordinary people by name, the way He called Zacchaeus down from a tree or Mary by name at the tomb. The same limitless understanding that tracks every star in the sky bent down at Bethlehem to know you personally, and went to a cross to prove exactly how far that knowledge was willing to go for you.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are great enough to count every star and personal enough to know my name. Thank You that You do not just notice my wounds from a distance but that You heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds with Your own hands. When I feel invisible or forgotten, remind me that Your understanding has no limit and that I have never once slipped from Your attention. Turn my scars into strength, and let my pain become a purpose that shines for others to see. Help me to believe today that I am seen, known, loved, and not forgotten. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Faith Declaration

I declare that I am seen by the God who counts the stars and known by the God who calls me by name. I am not invisible, and I am not forgotten. My hurts are not ignored — He heals the brokenhearted and binds up every wound. His wisdom has no limit, so I trust Him even where I cannot see the way forward. His power is strong enough for my story, and He is turning my scars into strength and my pain into a purpose that shines. I am not just another star. I am His. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
