Fasting is setting aside food (or something else) for a season to seek God with focused devotion. It is not about earning God’s favour, but about drawing near to Him with your whole heart.
Always fast wisely — if you have any health concerns, speak with a doctor first, and consider fasting from something other than food.
How to begin
- ✦Set a clear purpose — what are you seeking God for?
- ✦Choose the length and type (a meal, a day, or certain foods).
- ✦Replace meal times with prayer and Scripture.
- ✦Drink plenty of water and rest as needed.
- ✦Break your fast gently with light foods.
Keep your heart right
Fasting is between you and God, not for show. Let it soften your heart, sharpen your prayers and deepen your dependence on Him.
“But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret.”
Matthew 6:17-18
A prayer to pray
Father, as I seek You in fasting, let my hunger become a hunger for You. Quiet my heart, strengthen my spirit, and draw me close. Amen.
